Top Gear USA, Leno fears may suck...

I am happy and also unhappy at the same time when I learned that NBC is actually bringing over the successful British produced Top Gear here to the US. I am happy because Tanner Foust is one of the hosts, possibly giving drifting in general a big boost on TV. I am unhappy because I do not think they will do a good job with the show with the ever advertising intensive TV media. Just like Jay Leno says in an article on Autoblog:

Thankfully Leno turned down the offer, not because he's unworthy, but rather because he knows he couldn't do the show justice and because the idea of an American Top Gear is doomed from the start. Being part of the BBC, the original version is not reliant on advertising to stay on the air, so talking smack about a particular automaker and its wares is no biggie. As Leno notes, things work differently at NBC and any episode in which a sponsor gets lambasted would immediately be followed by what The Tonight Show host calls, "the meeting". And then, bye bye sponsors and bye bye show.

This is so true as it is evident on other car shows on Speed and other channels. These shows are all created to advertise and therefore the hosts are always kissing ass. I have yet to hear honest opinions from the hosts on these shows. All they talk about is how good the cars are and never do they say anything even slightly negative.

I really hope NBC will keep the auto manufacturers from sponsoring the show so the show can remain true and objective.

Taniguchi and Orido Lessons on Drifting for Beginners

I know this is in Japanese that most of you probably don't understand. However, at least these videos will give you a visual of the techniques in drifting. Starting from the very basic circles, please note the hand/foot work and timing of the driver. The key is to keep the revs up because the car will not have enough power to spin the tires if the revs are low. Don't worry about hitting red line as most cars have rev limiters. Keep an eye on your car's temperature when practicing to avoid overheating.

The key is to let the steering wheel to do its work and control the car with your throttle. The steering wheel will counter steer for you and all you have to do is to feed minute input into the steering wheel to change the direction of where you want the car to go. Don't be afraid to mesh on the throttle at the right time.

Most beginners will experience understeering. Understeering is when the car will not go the direction of when you turn your steering wheel to. Back off the throttle and let the front tire regain traction when that happens. Continue to mesh on the throttle when you are understeering will only cause you to understeer more in most cases.

XS Engineering R32 Time Attack at Buttonwillow

This is a while ago when it did a 1:49.21 in 2006. The RB26 is has a Tomie stroker kit upping the displacement to 2.8. Listen it roars to a stunning 9,700rpm redline. I love the sound of the RB.

On the turn before Lost Hill and the turn after the Esses, it looks like the driver could have taken at WOT but he held back just a little. I believe his time could definitely be improved by a full second.

Now the time attack record is held by the HKS CT230 Evo driven by Taniguchi putting up a 1:43. I can't wait to see the record broken again. This is a healthy competition and should boost up the tuner market here in the USA. If anybody looking for a time attack driver, I am available. I know Buttonwillow pretty well and did a respectable 2:03 with my 300hp mildly modified S14 on Falken Azenis RT-615.

Proper Racing Harness Mounting

I see a lot of people mount their racing harness to the OEM rear seat belt mounts, which is not the right way to do so. The belt will actually crush your shoulders upon impact instead of doing its job to hold you back from flying out the front wind shield because the belt will pivot the force of the impact downward onto your shoulders. The racing harness should ONLY be mounted as decribed in the picture below with proper hardware.

D1 Top Speed Competition at Autopolis. Cars go 0-400m then have to initiate and drift the D1 Autopolis course. First place is a S14 clocking 10.8 sec at 208km/h (130mph) before going sideways!!! Pretty damx fast! I love this because it combines drag racing with drifting!!!

Drift Angle Competition at Tsukuba last turn. This is pretty interesting too going for max angle while still maintaining a good drift.

Itch...

Well, I guess my break from motorsport will not be that long after all. I am itching to get back behind the wheel again!!! However, I am going to choose the people I will be working with more wisely to avoid the whole ordeal I went through in 2007.

This coming year, I plan to compete in Formula D and D1 as well as getting back my competition license so I can do some club racing. I really want to team up with Dan Pina, my long time racing buddy, again and do the 25 hour endurance at Thunderhill next year in December!

For drifting, there are talks about building a team. However, nothing has been done yet! The proposed car has not even gone into the shop to be built! Oh well, I guess I need some faith and have to wait and see.

Taking a break...

After careful consideration, I have decided to take a break from professional drifting to devote myself to my better half and my career at my new job at Nestle.

Drifting had brought me a lot of fun. I met a few good people. We shed sweats and blood at the tracks together. Drank like a fish. Smoked like a chimney. There were also not so pleasant and disappointing episodes.

From 2005-06, I started driving a team car that was not mine. That was when things started to get disappointing. The car was never quite ready and I hated it when I had to find out moments before I went on track that the car had problems. At the same time, the level of competition was also becoming more and more competitive. However, because of car problems, most of the time I was simply taking time off from work, flying all over the place to the events, spectating and helping out the team; doing everything except the chance to sit behind the steering wheel. I had my chances when the car ran ok and I did the best I could but I felt I had too much to prove to myself and my team and I fucked up a few times. It was then I started realizing that I was not even having that much fun anymore.

This year, I got burnt by a guy whom I thought were friends. Took advantage of me. Used my reputation to solicit monetary sponsorships that I was unaware of.

Then I joined another team, everything worked well and we did pretty well for a brand new car at Sonoma. However, due to lack of funds and lack of time, I was not able to fulfill my duty as a driver to attend all the events expected by the team. This discrepancy in expectations eventually led me to consider taking a break from professional drifting.

Now, I feel free. I don't need to beg for help, I don't need to spend more money, I don't need to worry about this and that. Now I can just focus to build a better life with my better half. Focus on my career at my new job. I feel free, I feel good, no more pressure.

My better half and I still attend practice events and drift for fun. We just got a S14 street car.

Thanks for reading. I guess it's official now. Don't know when I will make a come back but if things look right, I will definitely compete again.

It's been a while since I wrote. Lots of things have changed since then... I quitted Milano Drifting and joined Andrew's team. We will be using the VQSwap.com name to campaign my S14 with a VQ in it. It's not done yet and just in case, we are preparing his VQ S13 for Sonoma. We don't want any last minute hiccup.

Atlanta Formula Drift in two weeks!

Back to Atlanta! One of my favorite track in the Formula Drift circuit.

Tickets going there are expensive! $400 a piece!

We got a transport to go there. We need one more car to split the cost. $2,000 a car on an 3-car open trailer with a little bit of room for spaces. Contact me if interested.

The S14 was put back together by Chris. During the team drift comp last Sunday at Long Beach. I misjudged my speed and got too close to Chris on turn 4. I thought I could have made it through the high curb but failed. The car bounced off the curb, sending the car a feet in the air, and broke the driver side front strut top mount.

At work day dreaming about drifting. Now I got a place to share those thoughts with whoever is out there reading my blogs. Yea, I guess that's how I got good in racing and drifting without much practice; by thinking about it almost every waking moment. It's a sickness. It makes me unmotivated to do anything else including work... I just want to drift...

Long Beach was cool. It was an honor to drive on a historic race track where race legends once shined. I was so excited last Friday that I forgot I was suppose to drift. I drove the corners at speed and it was so fun! I love turn 1 to 4 where the fountain is. Those turns could be connected with one big drift. Not gaining full traction with the tarmac until after turn 4. If I dared I could probably connect to turn 5 without a manji but no point risking the car when Formula D Atlanta is just around the corner.

Thanks Chris, Sean and Andrew from VQSwap.com for their help and support. They are die hard people who are almost non-existence nowadays.

We have good people in the team this year. Just need to get the cars dialed in a bit more.
